How to use this hub
  • Open Lessons to review what we worked on in class.
  • Do one day of the 30-Day Challenge each day.
  • Once a week, read a real text from Readings.
The golden rule
Choose the answer supported by the text. Check meaning, scope and certainty; repeated words alone neither prove nor disprove an option.
The six reading tools
1. Verb grouptense and passive voice
2. Noun groupfind the head noun
3. Sentence structuresubject, verb, complement
4. Referencethis, these, it, they
5. Connectiveshowever, although, because

Lessons

A record of each class: the theme, the language we worked on, the errors to watch, and the material to keep.

Lesson 01 · TEAP Humanities

Grammar for Reading: reach the answer without translating everything

Theme

How to use grammar as a tool to find the correct answer in a reading exam, even when some words are unknown. We read for structure first, meaning second.

Language worked
Verb grouppresent, past, present perfect, passive voice
Noun groupthe head noun and its describers
Sentence structuresubject, verb, complement
Referencethis, these, it, they, such
Connectiveshowever, although, because, therefore, whereas
Negatives & modalsnot, rarely, may, cannot
Errors to watch
  • Reading a passive verb as if the subject does the action. A building does not build; it is built.
  • Choosing the option that only repeats words from the text.
  • Ignoring a small negative such as not or rarely that flips the meaning.
  • Trying to translate every word instead of finding the main verb first.
Material to keep

The three checks before you answer: (1) What is the main verb, and is it active or passive? (2) Is there a negative or a modal that changes the meaning? (3) Does my answer re-state the idea, or just repeat words?

Practise these tools every day in the 30-Day Challenge tab.

Your teacher can update this section as the course progresses.
One day at a time.

30-Day Challenge

Thirty days of original Academic Path reading practice. Read the embedded text, answer every question, then finish the day to reveal the key and explanations. These short exercises develop reading skills; they are not official TEAP questions or full mock tests.

Readings

The best practice for the TEAP is reading real academic abstracts in the Humanities. All the sources below are open access, so you can read them for free and with no account. Read only the English abstract, apply the tools, and do not translate every word.

How to practise: predict from the title, skim the abstract for the main idea, scan for one detail, notice the connectives, and find one passive verb. Five minutes per text is enough.

Open-access libraries

Huge, free collections. Browse by subject and open any article's English abstract.
